The season changes the answer
For a wedding in the mid November to mid December window, add a month to everything. That is the busiest six weeks in the Indian calendar, guests are attending three other weddings, and travel is booked early.
For a wedding in the quieter April to June season, four weeks is comfortable.
Sending late is not fatal any more
The reason invitations went out early was printing and courier, which took two to three weeks on their own. A link reaches the whole guest list the same day.
That does not mean you should send it late. It means a last minute addition to the guest list is no longer a problem, and neither is a change of venue.
Chasing replies
Two reminders is the practical maximum before it becomes nagging. Send the first three weeks out and the second at two weeks, both in the family group, both with the same link.
Guests who never reply are usually the ones who are coming. Count them at eighty per cent and tell the caterer that number.
The timeline that works
| When | What goes out | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months before | Save the date | Guests book leave and travel, especially for a Nov or Dec wedding |
| 6 to 8 weeks before | Invitation to guests travelling from abroad | Visas, flights and school holidays |
| 4 to 6 weeks before | The main invitation | Late enough that details are final, early enough to plan around |
| 3 weeks before | First reminder in the family group | Most replies arrive within two days of a reminder |
| 2 weeks before | Replies close | The caterer and the venue need a number |
| 3 days before | Directions and timings reminder | This is when people actually read the details |
Common questions
Four to six weeks before the wedding for most guests, six to eight weeks for guests travelling from abroad, and a save the date as soon as the muhurat is fixed.
About two weeks before the wedding, which is when the caterer and the venue need a confirmed number.
It is now the normal way most of an Indian guest list is invited. Many families still hand a printed card to close elders and send the link to everyone else.
